  • Candy Bar-Inspired Desserts

First off, who doesn't love candy bars? My personal faves are Zero bars, Twix, and Snickers. Since I love looking at food blogs and I've got chocolate on my mind, I thought I'd share some yummy candy bar-inspired desserts that I came across.

This looks absolutely delicious! It's super rich but it would be great to serve at a party.

    You had me at cheesecake.

The crust is made of Simply Sandies, which is one of my favorite cookies!

Have you made any candy bar-inspired desserts? If so, what kind?

  • Case of Mad Cow Disease Found in California

According to the Huffington Post, the USDA confirmed that a dairy cow in California had mad cow disease.

The cow was discovered at a transfer station in Hanford, California, but it's still unknown as to which farm the cow is from. Now before you freak out, USDA Chief Veterinary Officer John Clifford did state that all U.S. dairy and meat supplies are safe. The cow has been retained and authorities will ensure that the infected cow will not cause any harm.

Sounds like everything is under control, but I feel like my paranoia will keep me from eating beef for awhile just in case.

Does this news affect your choice in eating beef anytime soon?

  • 1-2-3 Cake

    photo cred: Kristen S.

I feel like I crave desserts all of the time, and one of the things I crave in particular is cake. Fortunately for me, my roommate saved the day with this awesome recipe.

I feel like mug cakes just recently became a big thing (or maybe it just blew up on Pinterest and that's why I think that). It's definitely a great idea because it's fast and you can make individual servings so you don't end up eating a whole cake..and I probably could. Now I have to admit that I wasn't really a fan of mug cakes initially. I tried to make one once (it was supposed to be chocolate but I tried to make it without cocoa powder since I didn't want to go to the grocery store) and the results weren't pretty. What I ended up with was a thick, glob-like mass that definitely wasn't cake-like. However, my roommate Kristen made this for me the other night and I have to say it's pretty good considering it uses the microwave.

She found it on Pinterest and it's called 1-2-3 Cake. If you want the recipe, you can check it out here. As you can see from the picture above, the cake has a nice light, fluffy texture and putting a dollop of icing on it only makes it better! The recipe is pretty simple, just choose any kind of cake mix you want plus a box of angel food cake mix. Kristen used Valentine Funfetti and I want to try chocolate next. You simply mix the 2 cake mixes and put it in a sealed container until you want to use it. Remember measurements is also a piece of cake (see what I did there?) because you just need to use 3 tablespoons mix, 2 tablespoons water, and 1 minute in the microwave (of course this will depend on the wattage of your appliance). It's also great because it's less calories than regular cake since you don't need any oil or eggs (though I guess using icing doesn't help silly). Obviously this isn't going to replace cakes or cupcakes but if you're craving a sweet fix, you should definitely try this!

Have you made mug cake before? How did it turn out?

  • My Top 5 Favorite Dim Sum

My parents are coming up this weekend, which means free food! Of course I'll be happy to see them, but it's nice to not have to pay for a meal, right?

There's a place called Dim Sum House about half an hour away from my school and whenever my parents visit, they always like to eat there. For those of you that don't know, dim sum is individual portions of Chinese food that's served on both small plates and in steamer baskets. We usually have dim sum for brunch and I'm definitely looking forward to all the delicious noms I'll be having. Here are my top 5 favorite dim sum:

    1. Spring rolls

My favorite part is definitely the flaky crunchy outside. I especially like spring rolls that have bean threads in them.

    2. Shrimp Rice Noodle Rolls

Gotta have soy sauce with a hint of sugar poured over them. So good!

    3. Turnip Cakes

Every once in awhile, my mom will make these. They're best when they have a crisp crust on the outside from searing in the frying pan.

    4. Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaves

This is good with soy sauce over it too. My sis and I fight over who gets the pork inside when my mom makes them.

    5. Fried Rice Balls

I'm not sure if there's a better name for them, (I know what they're called in Chinese but I'm not even going to try to translate that to English) but despite the grease, I like fried rice balls a lot. The ones I've had are filled with a pork and mushroom mixture.

Have you ever tried dim sum? If so, what's your favorite?

  • Top 5 Favorite Sodas

Yes, yes I know, drinking a lot of soda is bad for you. I try not to drink them a lot when I'm out (they can really make your bill add up when you're at a restaurant) but I definitely enjoy soda on occasion. Here are my top 5 favorite sodas:

    1. Ginger Ale

I don't know if a lot of people like ginger ale, but I always request it when my mom throws family gatherings at home.

    2. Cheerwine

This may not be available everywhere, but it's made in North Carolina and I think it tastes similar to a cherry Dr. Pepper.

    3. Mt. Dew Code Red

This soda is AMAZING with Taco Bell!

    4. Coca-Cola

Can't mess with a classic right?

    5.Sunkist

Who loves orange soda? Kel does..and so do I!

    What's your favorite soda?
